INTRODUCTION GUIDE
What is the Nollning?
The Nollning is the Nollas introduction to studentlife in Lund and W-guild-life. The Nollning is not obligatory for Nollan to be a part of, but it is highly recommended to attend as much Nollan can and wants to. The Nollning is a good opportunity for Nollan to get to know other students at the W-guild and LTH. The Nollning at LTH is rumored to be one of the best in the world, and is organized by a gigantic collaboration between Teknologkåren, LTH’s academic introduction and all the guild’s committees, board members, guild members and mentors. The Nollning is a period with many contributing parties, where everyone wants to give the Nolla a good start of the student life in Lund!
During the Nollning, you will be given a mentor group along with other exchange and master students that are a part of the W-guild. The mentors of the group are students that have been a part of the guild for a longer time, and will be there to guide and support you, and are fluent in english! The Nollning will be filled with many activities such as dinner-sittings, pubs, parties, study-evenings, competitions and so much more! Check out the Nollning-schedule for more info!

The activities are not allowed to disturbed the public either.
At some events and dinner-sittings that you will attend, there will be alcohol. There is a strics alcohol policy at LTH which means that if someone does not want to drink, it should never have to! A no is a no, and shall be accepted by everyone. At all event involving alcohol, there will be sober mentors.

Other things to sort out and tips
Cash-free country
Sweden is basically a cash-free country, compared to many others. Therefore it is good to be prepared with a card, rather than taking out money. Some places don’t accept international cards, therefore it can be a good idea to set up a Swedish bank account if you are staying for a longer time! Swish is an app that is commonly used for transferring money in Sweden, and can therefore be a good idea to download to your phone.
Orbi
Download the app Orbi to be able to buy tickets to events during, and also after the Nollning.
Bicycle
Lund is a city with many bike lanes and as a student the bike will be Nollan’s best friend. But don’t forget the bike lights during the dark hours of the day, or it could result in a fine for Nollan. It is also a good idea to get a bike early (along with a sturdy bike lock). The closer it gets to the start of the term, the harder it may be for Nollan to find a used one to purchase.
Clothing tips
During the introduction period, there will be fancy gatherings and parties with dress codes like ”broken suit”, ”dark suit” or ”formal attire”. It would be good to pack a blazer, suit, tuxedo, cocktail dress, or evening gown from home!
In addition, to the formal gatherings, some events will have themed dress codes. So if you have any fun costumes or dress-up items at home that you may think might come in handy, pack them with you!
The weather in Lund is very unpredictable and can change quickly. Several introduction events will be outdoors, so pack a pair of shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty and that you don’t have to be careful with.
Sewing Kit
The turquoise ouwen (overall) is every W student’s go-to outfit during the introduction period. It will be the garment Nollan wears the most. During Nollan’s time at LTH, the ouwen will be adorned with badges representing all of Nollan’s memories as a technology student. These badges can be attached with fabric glue, but they stick better if sewn on with thread and needle. So bring your sewing kit, and you can also mend clothes if needed.
Money
Once school starts, the first few weeks can involve some expenses, including textbook and school supplies, events, ouwe (student overall), or home funishings. It takes a while before the first student loan payment is disbursed, so it’s good to be aware of this in advance.
Sleeping bag and sleeping pad
There will be a super fun overnight event during the introduction period. Nollan wouldn’t want to miss it, so if possible, bring a sleeping bag and sleeping pad.
Drescodes
At LTH and during the Nollning, there are many different dress codes for different events. They can be difficult to keep track of sometimes, so here is your guide to the dress codes at LTH.
Ouwe/overall
The turquoise overall, or the ouwe, is every W-guild-students go-to during the Nollning. It can be worn in school, during mentor-hangout-eventings, at parties or the slasque-sittning. But do remember, it is not allowed to be worn in nations. It’s extra fun when the overall is decorated with strips that are exchanged from other guilds that wear a different color. Although, exchange of other parts of the ouwe such as buttons or pockets may have strong meanings behind them. There are alot of rules regarding the washing of the ouwe as well, so ask your mentors for more detailed information about the overall-rules. Patches for the overalls can be bought or handed out during differents event during the nollning. They can be sewn or glued on the overall.
Teknolog-hat
The teknolog-hat, is one of the most prime characteristics or a teknolog, and reveals a lot about its owner. The tassel is decorated with spegat, that represent the number of years someone has studied at at certain education.
The hat also reveals its owner’s relationship-status. A know above the spegat reveals that the person is in a relationship. Spegat that are high up on the tassel shows that the owner is looking for company for the evening. The hat has many traditions, one of them says, and you will learn quickly. However, one that is important is that you do not wear your hat before the nolle-gasque-sitting. There you will drink punch or alcoholic-free alternatives from the hat as a ceremony.
Bruten kavaj
This dress code is a type of nicer every-day-attire. Bruten kavaj means “broken jacket”, which basically means that the jacket does not match the pants. Feel free to google for example-pictures!
Mörk kostym
This dress code means a white shirt with a bow tie or tie, jacket and matching pants. For someone wishing to wear a skirt or dress, it’s a bit more free, but it should not be full length.
Högtidsdräkt
At a party with högtidsdräkt requires a “frack” or evening dress or ball gown.
Word list
Here are a few words that we use a lot that you may need help to understand!
Nollning: A name for the initiation weeks at LTH. This is organized by the students and none of the events are mandatory to attend. It is a great way to meet new people in your guild, as well as new people at LTH. Events include pubs, parties, study sessions, outdoor activities etc.
Academic Quarter: The times in the schedule are written 15 minutes before the actual time so that students will arrive on time. If your schedule says 8:00 in the morning, the lecturer will not start the lecture until 8:15. However if someone says the time 8:00 (..), they means 8:00 sharp. When it comes to exams, the academic quarter does not apply.
Tenta: The name for exams. Synonyms with stress, crying and coffee.
Missions (Uppdrag): All new students during the nollning will be divided into different mission groups during the first week. Depending on your mission, you will compete against the other guilds during the following weekend. The international group will receive a mission called Waderloo.
Monument: Different monuments are placed around campus, one for each section/guild. Students tend to paint these when no one sees in their own guild color (ours is turquoise).
Overall (Ouwe): The finest, most practical garment available. With these you can fit everything you need, and do not have to think about what pants you want to wear.
Phadder/mentor: These are older students who are here to welcome you during the “nollning”. They will be responsible for a group of new students and support them during their first weeks in Lund.
Sexmästeriet (Sexet): The committee that fixes food during various sessions and organizes the best parties.
Sittning: The translation is a “sit down” as one often sits down during the event whilst being offered food, drink and entertainment!
Spex: An entertaining performance during a sittning that could include singing and dancing.
Gasque: A night you do not want to miss! Think of it as a luxury sittning where everyone gets to dress up in their finest attire and attend a night of fine dining, entertaining and a night of dancing you will never forget.
Gasque: also a location at LTH where many events are held. Do not mix up with Gasque…
Sjøn Sjön: The one and only lake on LTH-s campus. The literal translation means “lake lake”, but think of it as “a lake called Sjøn”. There is an island in the middle of the lake which is called Øn ön or “island island”. Drinking the lake water is not recommended.
